Welcome to Leap Year 2020!! This year we will enjoy 366 days with Leap Day taking place on Saturday, February 29th. Who do we have to thank for an additional weekend day? It was Julius Caesar whom instituted Leap Year to keep the seasons aligned with the earth’s rotation. It takes the earth 365.24 times to rotate around the sun, meaning there are 5 hours, 48 minutes, and 45 seconds that can’t be applied to the tropical year of 365 days. The tropical year is the time required to pass from vernal equinox to vernal equinox, and used to keep track of the seasons. It may not sound like a big deal, but over the course of 100 years, 28 days would be gone, meaning the first day of spring would begin in late April. Of course, we don’t want to overcompensate leap years nor dant to mess up the earth astronomically, so in order to keep all aligned leap year is not used in century years, unless they are divisible by 400.
