Happy Vegan Month!

November 1st was Vegan Day, kicking off a month-long observation of the Vegan lifestyle.  Like any lifestyle, veganism exists on a spectrum. At its core, to be vegan is to avoid any product that comes from an animal.

We’re all taught the Pythagorean theorem in math class, but did you know he was may have been one of the first to promote vegetarianism and a benevolent relationship between humans and animals? Among other millennium-old vegetarians are the Buddha and his followers, and followers of Hinduism and Jainism. In the west, vegetarianism and the stricter form of veganism only truly took hold in the 19th century.

While vegetarians avoid direct animal products like meat and gelatin, vegans avoid dairy, eggs, and honey. Vegans also tend to avoid all animal byproduct like wool, silk, leather, and beeswax.

Technology and larger supply chains have made it increasingly easier to create faux meat and dairy products from plants. It’s also easier to get vegan alternatives to ingredients such as beeswax or honey.

We’re proud to supply a variety of plant-based, vegan-friendly products. Here are a few to get you started:

Algae oil is a plant-based marine oil taken from grown (algae name), while chia seed oil is as its name suggests: oil of the chia seed! Since fish-derived omega-3 is off the table, these are two great vegan alternatives.

Squalane Oil from Olives is a great vegan choice for cosmetics. Squalane occurs naturally in plants, animals, and humans, making it desirable for our skincare products. Historically, a lot of squalane in products was shark-derived but plant-based squalane is rising in popularity due to the ethical concerns of shark hunting.

Beeswax has a lot of vegan alternatives, and we supply many of them! Some to look for are our Olive and Sunflower waxes, which can be used in foods, cosmetics, and soaps. We also supply Sumac wax, great for cosmetics.

Sweeten up your food with Date syrup instead of honey! It has a molasses like consistency, heat-extracted from dried dates.
