Protecting Your Skin This Summer

It’s officially summer in the Northern Hemisphere, which means you need to protect and care for your skin differently than during those cold, dry months. Bug bites and sun damage can turn summer into a bummer. You’ve heard it before, but it’s true that the best care can be preventative care!

Start by keeping pests and bugs away with essential oils. We love citrus aromas, but mosquitos sure don’t. Citronella (EHM1018, EHM1019) is one of the most popular ingredients in bug repellent candles, sprays, and bracelets. Another front runner is Eucalyptus citriodora (EHM1045), also known as lemon eucalyptus, a pure essential oil increasing in popularity as an ingredient to combine with citronella or use on its own.

Hopefully you didn’t forget your sunscreen! Regardless, after-sun products can only benefit your beautiful skin. We love the sun, but its heat can dry you out and seriously damage your skin over time. Butters like Shea or Cocoa are frequently used in lotions and creams to add and lock in moisture. Some mineral sunscreens also use these as a base. Coconut Oil is also used as an emollient base in many products and sometimes even as a home-remedy for sunburns! The calling of the tropics from its scent is an added, summery bonus.

Last and certainly not least: Organic Aloe Vera Powder (A1000). Much research has been done on Aloe Vera for sunburn relief. It is most commonly found in gel form where it’s most effective for burns, but the powder is fantastic as an added supplement to creamy topical products, especially those designed for locking in moisture and soothing inflammation.
