Celebrate in December!

We made it to December and what a journey it’s been this year! December is a month full of celebrations and traditions throughout history across the globe. How you prefer to enjoy yourself during this time depends mostly on your upbringing… and this year, maybe some new social distancing practices.

Many in North America and Europe celebrate with gifts, Christmas trees, bright lights, and let’s not forget about the annual visit from good ol’ Saint Nick, commonly known as Santa Claus. Icelanders are fortunate enough to have 13 Santas, each with its own unique name. For thirteen days prior to Christmas, Jolasveinar, little Santas, leave small gifts in shoes left out on the windowsill. Individuals south of the equator have quite a warm holiday, celebrating during their summer months. A visit from Father Christmas is a must and a traditional Church service, but a trip to the beach or a backyard cookout is likely to take place. Costa Rica will be raging with tropical flowers and wreaths made of cypress branches. Midnight Mass is customary followed by Christmas dinner.

December doesn’t only bring Christmas! The 21st is the Winter Solstice, heralding the shortest day of the year. The old Norse and Germanic people celebrated this day as Yule, and the celebration of it is increasing in popularity once again. Hanukkah, falling on December 10th this year, starts with the lighting of the menorah, and celebrates for eight days with traditional foods and gifts. The week long celebration of Kwanzaa begins on the 26th, celebrating African heritage, unity, and creativity with art, dance, candle lighting, and a feast.

No matter how you relish in the holiday season this year, please stay safe and healthy! Practice social distancing, wear a mask, and avoid large crowds or gatherings of people outside of your safe circle as much as possible. Let us all do our part in stopping the spread of COVID-19, and be hopeful for a happy and healthy 2021 for all.

In the meantime, it costs nothing to be generous and kind, and we can all encourage others to pay that kindness forward. With December being the month of giving, Jedwards would also like to spread some holiday cheer by extending 15% off the following select wholesale products.
