Sun Awareness Week: Are You Prepared for the Summer?

Things are heating up in the Northern Hemisphere! Summer is almost here as the earth’s Northern axis is rotating towards the sun, increasing its strength and time in the sky. Excessive exposure to the sun can wreak havoc on the skin, not only in its appearance but in the cells below the surface.

The British Association of Dermatologists, in an effort to motivate people to prioritize the health of their skin, created the campaign Sun Awareness Week, running from May 1st to May 7th.  While it’s of course naturally effective to stay out of the rays during the sun’s strongest hours and wear UV-protective clothing to protect our skin, sometimes it’s just not an option or what we want. This is when the vital importance of sunblock lotion comes into play.

Sun creams operate in two ways – as a physical sunscreen that sits on top of the skin as a literal barrier, or as a chemical sunscreen, which can take about 20 minutes to absorb into the skin, changing some UV rays into heat that is released from the skin. Whichever method you prefer largely comes down to personal preference, but it should be noted that chemical sunscreens may not block all UVA rays.

Physical sunscreens are often formulated with Zinc Oxide, an odorless white powder. Jedwards International is a bulk supplier of USP Grade Zinc Oxide; this material is also non-nano, meaning each particle is not smaller than 100 nanometers in size. This UVA and UVB absorber is a preferred ingredient for sunscreens, in addition to other topicals such as shampoos and calamine lotion.

It’s extremely important to rehydrate your skin after exposure, and we supply the a handful of natural ingredients yielding nourishing properties. Moisturizing butters and oils like Jojoba Butter and Coconut Oil are optimal bases for cooling the skin and resisting dryness. Aloe Vera Extract Powder is often included in lotions to promote cooling of the burnt skin and soothe irritation from sunburns.
