I have fond memories of neighborhood barbeques on hot, summer nights in my youth. Ultimately, the evening would end with devouring sweet, delicious watermelon slices. However, the biggest quandary I recall was, “What do I do with those pesky seeds?” The cosmetics industry finally found a clever solution to this problem. Kalahari Melon Oil (S1302), better known as Watermelon Seed Oil is the newest cosmetic phenomenon to hit the market and Jedwards International is pleased to announce we have added it to our ever-growing list of raw ingredients.
Kalahari Melon Oil is extracted by cold pressing the seeds of the Citrulus lanatus which originated in the Kalahari region of Southern Africa; one of the driest locations on the planet. The biological ancestor of the watermelon, Kalahari Melon grows on a creeping annual plant with hairy stems and bright yellow flowers. It yields a pale yellow or green flesh which tastes bitter. Kalahari Melon Oil is a light carrier oil which absorbs quickly without a greasy feel, making it great for acne-prone skin. The material is high in unsaturated fatty acids, dominated by linoleic and oleic acids. Compared to that of other melons, this material shows significant antioxidant activity, with 5% higher levels of tocopherols. Tocopherols are a family of vitamin E compounds boasting anti-inflammatory properties. Kalahari Melon Oil has emollient, regenerating and restructuring properties.
Traditionally used by the indigenous people of the Kalahari desert as an important source of water when traversing the desert, Kalahari seeds were later placed in tombs of kings in Egypt with a belief of nutritious sustainability in the after-life. Fast forward to 2017, and the Kalahari Melon Oil is taking the cosmetic industry by storm. It can now be found in hair care products, cleansing creams, moisturizers, baby formulations, soaps and massage oil. Contact Jedwards International today to sample or purchase this new material the cosmetic world is buzzing about.
