NEW: Sodium Saccharin

Our newest product is the oldest alternative sweetener: Sodium Saccharin!

This sultam was accidentally produced in 1879 by Constantin Fahlberg in Ira Remsen’s laboratory. After spilling his experimental work on his hands, he later tasted something surprisingly sweet while eating and linked it back to a compound he had been working on earlier that day: benzoic sulfimide.

He began producing the substance himself under the name “saccharin” a couple years after his discovery. While it intrigued manufacturers, its usage was not very common until a few decades later when table sugar became very difficult to get hold of in World War 1 and 2. Saccharin was widely used in place of sucrose in both civilian and military applications during this time period and shifts in diet culture post-war led to saccharin sticking around.

Saccharin itself is a white crystalline powder with a flavor profile that is hundreds of times sweeter than table sugar. It can carry a bitter aftertaste, especially in large concentrations, so it is sometimes combined with other artificial sweeteners to balance it out.

Whether by necessity or personal choice, there will always be consumer demand for calorie-free sweet treats. Sweeteners in single serving packets are a staple in coffee shops and restaurants, with saccharin typically in the bright pink packages by popular brand Sweet’N Low. In food and beverage manufacturing, saccharin is used to add sweetness to low calorie or sugar-free sodas, juices, candies, jams, packaged foods, and baked goods.

This prevalent sweetener is not only an ingredient in edible goods! Sodium saccharin can improve the flavor of many dental hygiene products, like teeth whitening strips, oral sprays, toothpaste, and mouthwash. It is utilized in lip products like lipstick, glosses, balms, and scrubs to mask unwanted flavor or add sweetness to flavored cosmetics and personal care items.
