September is National Honey Month in the United States! This month is all about promoting the importance of beekeeping and honey. September is an important time of year for American beekeepers as in many states it marks the end of the collection season as fall begins to roll in.
Ever wonder why people say “busy as a bee?” It takes around 2 million flowers and a lot of flying to make just one pound of honey, but these insects can make up to 100lbs of honey per hive each year. Honey bees tend to produce more honey than they can even eat, so beekeepers remove the excess for humans to enjoy.
It’s hard to say when exactly humans started collecting honey, but prehistoric cave paintings dated as far back as 6,000 BCE depict people taking this natural sweetener from a hive. Evidence from Egypt points to beekeeping as a practice possibly starting sometime around 3,100 BCE.
Outside of its culinary usage, honey was used in folk medicine and religious rites; many of these uses for honey are still common today: in baking, to sweeten tea, and as a home remedy. It also has humectant properties that are beneficial in cosmetics and personal care items, such as balms, serums, and cleansers.
